- Those Indian historians who criticised the British colonial policies and exhibited the greatness and glory of India’s past are known as nationalist historians. Their writings are known as nationalistic historiography.
- In Maharashtra, nationalist writings were inspired by Vishnushastri Chiplunkar. He condemned the prejudiced history of ancient India by British historians.
- The nationalist historians wrote about the golden period of Indian history. But, they are blamed for not critically analysing the ancient Indian history.
- Some famous nationalist historians are Mahadev Govind Ranade, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, R.C. Mazumdar, R.K. Mukherjee, Bhagwan Lal Indraji and Anant Sadashiv Altekar.
- The nationalistic historiography awakened pride among the Indians and helped in triggering the national movement. V.K. Savarkar wrote a book on the Indian revolt of 1957 entitled ‘The Indian War of Independence, 1857’.
