The following two processes are responsible for the formation of sedimentary rocks:
Compaction: When soft and loose sediments are squeezed between overlying layers of rocks and the rocks lying beneath them, they harden. For example sand stone is formed after compacting of sand.
Cementation: The binding together of compacted sediments by natural materials like silica and iron is called cementation.
