Ikhtiyar-ud-din Muhammad bin Bakhtiyar Khilji overthrew the Sena dynasty in Bengal and plundered Bihar.
In Bihar, his raids gave a death blow to the existing Buddhist monasteries. Nalanda University in Bihar was destroyed. Buddhist libraries were burnt, and thousands of Buddhist monks were killed. As a result, Buddhism was never able to regain its ground in the region. Many Buddhist monks escaped to Tibet with valuable manuscripts.
