Five challenges currently faced by the textile industry of Mumbai are:

  1. There is a scarcity of good quality long staple cotton in India. It thus has to be imported from Egypt, Sudan, Tanzania etc.
  2. Many textile mills still use obsolete machinery. Out dated technology has led to a decrease in the production.
  3. Lack of continuous and regular power supply has harmed the textile industry in Mumbai to a great extent.
  4. The textile industry is facing stiff competition from synthetic fibre producing units like rayon, nylon, polyester etc. It is because these fibres are not only cheap but are also durable.
  5. Currently, lack of proper space, high rate of taxation, high costs of living are some problems that are faced by the textile mills of Mumbai.
