Expert Answer
Five challenges currently faced by the textile industry of Mumbai are:
- There is a scarcity of good quality long staple cotton in India. It thus has to be imported from Egypt, Sudan, Tanzania etc.
- Many textile mills still use obsolete machinery. Out dated technology has led to a decrease in the production.
- Lack of continuous and regular power supply has harmed the textile industry in Mumbai to a great extent.
- The textile industry is facing stiff competition from synthetic fibre producing units like rayon, nylon, polyester etc. It is because these fibres are not only cheap but are also durable.
- Currently, lack of proper space, high rate of taxation, high costs of living are some problems that are faced by the textile mills of Mumbai.
