Capillary action is the phenomenon of rise or fall of a liquid in a capillary tube when it is dipped in the liquid . Due to this the portion of the surface of the liquid coming in contact with a solid is elevated or depressed.

Angle of contact is the angle which the tangent plane to the liquid surface makes with the tangent plane to the solid surface drawn into the liquid at any point on the line of contact between the liquid and solid.
