In the liver, the decomposed haemoglobin of the worn-out RBC's are turned into bilirubin and biliverdin. These pass into the alimentary canal with the bile and get thrown out with the faeces. Through the bile, cholestrol, steroid hormones, some vitamins and drugs are also excreted by the liver. The liver breaks down toxic substances and most medicinal products.


Liver deaminates excess amino acids. An amino group (- NH₂) is removed from the amino acid. This NH₂ combines with a hydrogen ion and produces ammonia. Ammonia combines with CO₂ to form urea. Urea is removed by the kidneys.
