Achievements of the Cholas- Temple building
The Cholas reached the height of their power during the tenth, eleventh and twelfth centuries. The Cholas continued the temple-building traditions of the Pallava dynasty and contributed significantly to the Dravidian temple design. Number of Shiva temples were built during the Chola dynasty. Temple building received great impetus from the conquests and the genius of Rajaraja Chola and his son Rajendra Chola (r. 1014 C.E.). They built numerous temples throughout their kingdom. The Brihadeshvara Temple at Thanjavur is considered as one of the greatest example of excellent temple architecture. The magnificent Siva temple of Thanjavur, completed around 1009, stands as a fitting memorial to the material achievements of the time of Rajaraja. The temple of Gangaikondacholapuram is another magnificent temple built by the Cholas. The temple complex is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
