The socio religious reformers worked on the following three issues:

• Raja Ram Mohan Roy, an important social reformer worked for the abolition of the ‘Sati’ practise in India. This custom was declared as a crime punishable by law in 1829
• Many reformers in the 19^th and the 20^th centuries worked for the upliftment of the condition of women and advocated widow remarriages.
• Social religious reformer condemned the caste system and strived for equality and education of the people of lower caste. Example, Jyotiba Phule and Periyar.
