answered-by-expert Expert Answer
Whenever a substance undergoing phase change, for example, solid melts into liquid at melting point
or liquid is getting vaporaised at boiling point, there is a an absorption of heat energy at constant temperature.
Similarly when vapour phase is getting cooled and changed to liquid pase at liquification point, thermal energy is liberated by
vapour phase at constant temperature. When liquid is getting cooled to solid, heat energy is liberated by liquid at constant freezing point temperature.
This absorption or liberation of thermal energy at constant temperature during phase change is called as latent heat.

example:- when ice melts into water,  it absorbs 336 kJ/kg of heat energy at 0ºC. Hence latent heat of fusion of ice is 336 kJ/kg.
When water is getting converted to steam at 100ºC, it absorbs 2268 kJ/kg of heat energy . Hence latent heat of vapouraisation of steam is 2268 kJ/kg
