We assume that it is a follow up query of your previous question in which we had to find least perimeter of an isosceles triangle in which a circle of radius 'r' was inscribed. 
In the solution, we took angle 'x' as a variable. Then, the perimeter was expressed in terms of 'x'. The function of 'x' was then differentiated with respect to 'x' to find its extrema. 
This is a standard method to solve any problem where we have to find maximum or minimum value of a variable.
In this particular question, we do have a choice of taking height 'h' of the triangle as a variable instead of angle 'x'. In that case, we have to express the perimeter in terms of 'h'.
But, we have to follow the same procedure of finding the first derivative, and then equating it to zero to find the minima or maxima. That would be an alternative solution, but not necessarily a simpler solution.
However, with practice, you will definitely be able to imrpove your speed of formulating a maxima-minima problem and solving it.
