Is the usage of the underlined idiom in the sentence correct? The mistress cried wolf when she realised that the maid was slowly poisoning her.

‘To cry wolf’ means to say there is danger when there is none.

In the sentence, the mistress sensed genuine danger. Hence, the idiom has been incorrectly used.
