Society during the sultanate period was divided into four groups. These were

  1. The aristocracy: This class was the ruling class which included the kings, princes, nobles and Hindu rajas. This was the most powerful and the wealthy class in society.
  2. Priests: This group included the Brahmins, Ulemas and maulvis. The Ulemas were the chief advisors of the king. Brahmins occupied an important position in the Hindu society.
  3. Town dwellers: This class consisted of the people who lived in the towns. This class included the craftspeople, merchants, traders, bankers and domestic servants. The merchants, traders and bankers were prosperous.
  4. Peasants: They generally lived in the villages. Cultivation was their main occupation. This class paid taxes to the kings which was the main source of revenue for the Government. However, this class was mostly poor and suffered because of unjust taxation and unreliable weather.
