# Initially car x is 4 m ahead of car y. Both start moving at t 0 in same direction along straight line. The velocity-time graph of two cars is shown in figure. The time when car y will catch the car x will be

Car-x moves with uniform speed 1 m/s.
Car-y has acceleration a, which is given by ,  a = dv/dt = tan45 = 1 m/s2

Let after t seconds car-y catch car-x. Let car-x has moved a distance S m in t seconds.

for car-y :-    S+4 = (1/2)×a×t2 .....................(1)
for car-x :-        S/t = 1 .......................(2)

By eliminating S from eqn.(1) and (2) and with substitution a = 1 m/s2 , we get    t2 = 2t+8   or t = 4 s

Hence after 4 seconds, car-y will catch car-x
