The population of the Northern states was more than twice that of the Southern states. Despite the fact that many people, in both the Northern and Southern states, worked on agricultural farms, the Northern become both more industrialized and more urbanized, while plantation agriculture remained the focus in the South.
The major difference between the North and the South -- and the one most responsible for the Civil War -- was the institution of slavery. In the North, slavery was almost prohibited by the 1800s, while the institution was a cornerstone of Southern society. The South's slave economy supported agriculture, while the North's free society enabled industrialization.
