Expert Answer
The unfortunate split in the Congress in 1907 presented an opportunity for the British to exploit the situation to their own advantage. They adopted a policy of ‘concession and repression’ wherein they gave favourable concessions to the Early Nationalist Congress leaders as well as the Muslim community in general. At the same time, they also repressed the Assertive Nationalists in order to crush the newly emerging brand of aggressive, militant nationalism.
