Dear Student
Thanks for asking us a question in Ask the Expert section of TopperLearning.com.
For a solar eclipse to occur, the Sun, Moon and Earth have to be in a straight line with the Moon between the Sun and the Earth. The shadow of the Moon falls on a part of the Earth. As a result, the Sun is not visible to people on this part of the Earth. This occurs only on a New Moon Day. Therefore, a solar eclipse occurs only on a New Moon night while a lunar eclipse occurs only on a Full Moon night.
