in an equilibrium why the concentration of reactants and products is not equal but constant?

  • At equilibrium, the rate of forward reaction is equal to rate of backward reaction.
  • Hence, at equilibrium, the concentrations of the reactants and products remain constant.
  • That does not necessarily mean the concentration of the reactants are equal to concentrations of the products.
 
  • Take an example of the following equilibrium reaction:
  • pA + qB ↔ rC + sD
 
  • In the above case, if p=q=r=s, then the concentration of the reactants is equal to the concentration of the products at equlibrium.
  • But, if they are not equal then the concentration of the reactants is not equal to the concentration of the products at equlibrium.
  • However, in both the cases, at equlibrium, the concentrations of the reactants and products remain constant.
