ICSE Class 9 Answered

In 5 years .Jagriti will be two -thirds as old as her aunt .Three years ago ,she was half as old as her aunt is now .How old are they now? It's answer is Jagriti's age =17 years  her aunt 's age =28 years  please tell me how

Let the present ages of Aunt and Jagriti be x and y respectively.

 
According to the first condition, we get
y + 5 = 2/3(x + 5)
→ 3y + 15 = 2x + 10
→ 2x - 3y  = 5  .... (1)

According to the second condition, we get
y - 3 = 1/2(x)
x - 2y = -6  .... (2)
 
Solving (1) and (2) simultaneously, we get
x = 28 and y = 17
 
Therefore the present ages of Aunt and Jagriti be 28 years and 17 years respectively.
