The First World War led to an immense increase in the defense expenditure of the British government which had to be financed through war loans and a steep increase in taxes. In pursuance of this, the British administration in India increased the customs duties and introduced income tax. The prices of various commodities also doubled between 1913 and 1918 causing great hardships for the common populace unconnected to the war. The government also resorted to forced recruitment in rural areas, causing widespread anger and disenchantment. This situation was further compounded by the failure of crops in 1918-19 and 1920-21. The resultant shortage of food was accompanied by an influenza epidemic and led to the death of almost 12 to 13 million people.
