If a sheet of aluminium foil of negligible thickness is placed exactly at the centre of the two plates of a parallel plate condenser and the foil is connected to the upper plate, then the capacitance is doubled since d is reduced to half.

Capacitance C = ε0A/d  , where A is area of plates and d is separation distance between plate.
 
When a thin aluminium foil is placed exactly at middle of plates and connected to upper plate,
then aluminium foil acts as one of plates of the capacitor. hence the distance is reduced to d/2
 
Now the capacitance begin mathsize 12px style C apostrophe space equals space epsilon subscript o fraction numerator A over denominator open parentheses begin display style d over 2 end style close parentheses end fraction space equals space 2 space epsilon subscript o space A over d space equals space 2 C end style,  hence capacitance doubles
