I am not able to find the sign of object distance of a convex lens. Is it + or - ?

Answer:

Hi Krishna,

The following illustration can help you understand that the object distance in lens:

  • The distances on the principal axis should be measured from the optical center.
  • The distances measured in the direction of incident rays are positive and the distances measured in the direction opposite to that of the incident rays are negative.
  • All distances measured above the principal axis are positive. 
  • Therefore, height of an object and that of an erect image are positive and the distances measured below the principal axis are negative.
