Many symbols are the first letter of the name or the first two letters of the name of the element.
- In most cases, the first letter of the name of an element was taken as the symbol for that element and written in capital.
- Example: C for Carbon.
- In some cases, the first letter of the name in capital along with its second letter in small, from its name were used.
- Example: Ca for Calcium.
- The symbols of some elements are formed from the first letter of the name and a letter appearing later in the name.
- Example: Cd for Cadmium.
- The symbols for some elements were derived from their Latin, German or Greek names.
- Example: Na for Sodium is derived from its Latin name Natrium.
