How to identify which is series resistance and which is parallel resistance in a combination of resistances? how to differentiate Series resistance and parallel resistance?

If the effective resistance is greater than the greatest of the resistances connected, then the resistances are connected in series.
If the effective resistance is less than the smallest of the individual resistances then the resistances are connected in parallel.
