If the atomic number is given from the electronic configuration we can find the position of the element in the periodic table.

Example:

The atomic number of carbon is 6.

Electronic configuration: (2,4)

The number of valence electrons gives the group number and number of shells gives period.

So it corrosponds to group 4 and period 2.
