Expert Answer
HCF is the highest common factors of the two numbers.
Process to find HCF:
Get prime factorisation of the numbers
Write the common prime factors and multiply them to get the HCF
Steps to find LCM:
Get prime factorisation of the numbers
Write the each prime factor with highest powers present in both the numbers and multiply them to get the LCM
Example:
Let the numbers be 56 and 48
56 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 7 = 23 x 7
48 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 3 = 24 x 3
HCF = 2 x 2 x 2 = 8
LCM = 24 x 7 x 3 = 336
