Differences between transformants and recombinants:

Transformants

Recombinants
  • Transformants are cells which have undergone genetic transformation through the uptake of foreign DNA.
  • Recombinants are the cells which contain a combining genetic material with different origins.
  • They are the host cells which are able to express the recombinant DNA.
  • They should be able to self-replicate within the host organism.
  • They are the cells which can be easily grown and multiply are selected as host cells.
  • They must be easily extractable and should contain selectable markers.
  • They contain either a cloning vector or a recombinant vector.
  • They contain a recombinant vector.
  • They may or may not contain the gene of interest of transformation.
  • They contain the gene of interest of transformation.
  • They are selected through antibiotic resistance.
  • They are selected through the expression of selectable marker genes.
