Suspend the magnet whose poles are to be detected from rigid support with the help of string or thread. The magnet will get aligned in N-S direction. The pole pointing toward the geographic north pole is north pole of the magnet while the other pole will be the south pole. This occurs because the Earth's magnetic south pole is at the geographic North pole and the North pole of bar-magnet gets attracted towards the Earth's magnetic South pole.
