How the zinc plate present in Volta's cell gets a negative charge whereas its valency is +2?
- The voltaic cell works on the principle that, when two non-similar metals are immersed inside an electrolyte solution the higher reactive metal will dissolve in the electrolyte as a positive ion, thereby, leaving the electrons behind on the metal plate.
- This deposition of electrons makes the metal plate, negatively charged.
- Similarly, the lesser reactive metal attracts positive ions in the electrolyte and makes it positively charged.
- Thus in voltaic cell, the zinc (higher reactive metal) comes out in the sulfuric acid solution (electrolyte) as the positive ion and becomes negatively charged due to the deposition of electrons on zinc plate after it.
