Speed of sound v = 343 m/s
 
When the engine approaching the hill, frequency of sound heard at hill is equivalent to sound source moving towards target.
 
hence frequecy of sound at hill, ν = ν0 × [ 1 - (vs / v )]-1 = 1240×[1-(20/343)]-1 = 1240×(343/323) = 1317 Hz
ν is the changed frequency due to movement, ν0 is the frequency of sound source and vs is the sound source velocity
 
When echo is heard, again frequency increases due to movement of sound waves towards target
 
ν = ν0 × [ 1 - (vs / v )]-1 = 1317×[1-(20/343)]-1 = 1317×(343/323) = 1398 Hz
