Expert Answer
In case of flowering plants, female gametophyte develops within the ovule or the megaspore contained within the ovary at the base of the pistil of the flower.
There are usually 8 haploid cells in the female gametophyte of a flowering plant:
- 3 antipodal cells (at the opposite end of the embryo sac from the egg)
- 2 synergids flanking the egg (located at the micropylar end of the embryo sac)
- 1 egg cell
- 2 polar nuclei (in the center of the embryo sac)
