How lake is formed?

- Lakes are formed due to the action of glaciers and ice sheets. Such lakes are formed when glaciers erode the land creating a depression. Many lakes in the Himalayan region are of glacial origin.
- Oxbow lakes are crescent in shape and are formed when a meandering river is cut off from the rest of the river.

A salt lake is formed when water containing salt or minerals enters a lake with no natural outlet. Water then evaporates leaving behind dissolved salt and minerals which increase the salinity of the water.

Artificial lakes are formed when dams are constructed on rivers for the purpose of generating electricity.
