The native Indian rulers were also responsible for the Great Uprising of 1857. It is because the British unjustfully occupied several Indian states. On the pretext of the Doctrine of Lapse, several states like Jhansi, Satara, Nagpur, Jaitpur, Udaipur and Sambhalpur were annexed.
Apart from it, the British also took away ragal titles of the Nawab of Carnatic and Tanjor. The Subsidiary Alliance System was also forced on several states. Awadh was annexed on the charges of mis-governance. They also showed disrespect to the Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar.
All these reasons led to discontentment among the Indian princes and rulers who then revolted against the British.
