The Green House Effect affects our environment in the following ways:

  1. The Green House Effect results in a rise of temperature world wide. This rise in temperature can be disastrous as it will lead to the melting of snow in glaciers and the subsequent rise in sea level.
  2. The rise in sea level will further result in submergence of coastal areas. It may also result in the loss of wetlands and mangrove forests.
  3. Increase in the temperature will result in the rapid evaporation of water from the soil. This will lead to soil erosion and it will not be able to retain moisture for a longer period of time. This may lead to the occurrence of droughts.
  4. The deltas will be threatened by occasional floods, soil erosion and salt deposition. For example, it has been estimated that deltas in the Ganga Brahmaputra river system will be affected by floods, salt deposition and the loss of lands.
  5. Global warming may result into the submergence of many small islands. This would render many people homeless in low lying countries like Bangladesh.
