CBSE Class 10 Answered
How does refractive index of a substance is affected by refractive index of surrounding medium?
Asked by jgprmr | 17 Jun, 2017, 09:10: PM
Expert Answer
Refractive index of a material depends upon the material's properties. It does not directly depend upon any surrounding media involved.
However, refractive index does depend on the wavelength of light that is incident on the medium. So, if there is a surrounding medium which alters the wavelength of light then indirectly this will alter the refractive index of the medium. So, yes we can say that refractive index depends on the wavelength which depends on the surrounding medium.
