CBSE Class 12-science Answered

How does a capacitor act as filter in a rectifier?

When capacitor is not charged, it is effectively a short circuit, so the current will flow there most easily. Once it gets charged, it "pushes" back, which coincides with the output voltage from the rectifier sagging (with an appropriate choice of capacitance). In other words, the capacitor stores enough charge to "fill in" the troughs in the output current.
