Expert Answer
People from different regions spoke different languages, but the introduction of English helped them converse with each other in a common language. Though a vast majority of the population had absolutely no knowledge of English or Western education, the slowly developing educated middle class used English extensively for its inter-regional linkages. Since English allowed them to exchange ideas and views about the politics and economics of British India, it encouraged a sense of unity.
