The nationalists considered the education system existing under the British government inadequate and deeply prejudiced. Satish Chandra Mukherjee, the editor of Dawn, conceived of a scheme of national education. There were about 25 secondary and 300 primary national schools established in Bengal in the year 1908. These schools imparted literary, technical and physical education. On August 15, 1906, a National College with Aurobindo Ghose as the Principal was set up in Kolkata.
