Expert Answer
Before the British conquest of India, the vast Indian peninsula was divided between different states with their own systems of government. However, as the English East India Company brought the different states under its control, it also established a common system of government with a common code of law, rules and regulations. Therefore, in essence, while trying to subjugate the Indian nation through military conquest, the British also unified it politically and economically and hence sowed the seed for the later development of Indian nationalism.
