Expert Answer
Before the Congress could start its proposed Quit India Movement, the British government acted with swift repressive measures. In the early hours of August 9, Gandhi and other prominent Congress leaders were arrested and taken to unknown destinations and the Congress was once again declared illegal. Although the whole country had erupted in a nationalist fervor and strikes and demonstrations were intense, the British authorities lathi-charged and fired upon them on a huge scale.
