  • Murshid Quli Khan became the new governor of Bengal in 1717. It was during his governorship that Bengal emerged as an independent state.
  • As the power of the Mughal empire began to weaken, he consolidated his position in Bengal and decaled himself the nawab and paid only nominal allegiance to the Mughal emperor.
  • He shifted the capital of Bengal from Dhaka to Murshidabad.
  • Alivardi Khan who was earlier, the governor of Patna, became the nawab by defeating ansd killing Sarfaraz Khan in 1740 and ruled for 16 years thereafter.
  • he was an efficient ruler who removed corrupt and inefficient jagirdars.
  • Alivardi Khan gave many concessions to the Marathas to maintain peaceful relations with them.

Bengal prospered under the rule of both Murshid Quli Khan and Alivardi Khan.
