How can we determine whether a compound is organic or inorganic ?

Organic compounds contain carbon with the exception of few carbon compounds like oxides, carbonates, carbides and cyanides which are inorganic compounds.
They generally do not dissolve in water but dissolve in organic solvents like alcohol, benzene and chloroform.
They have low m.p andb.p and decompose easily on heating.
They are inflammable and catch fire easily.
They form covalent bonds and are non-electrolytes.
Organic compounds have characteristic colour and odour and show the phenomenon of isomerism.

Inorganic compounds do not contain carbon except for the following carbon compounds; oxides, carbonates, carbides and cyanides.
They dissolve in water but insoluble in organic solvents.
They have high m.p and b.p and usually do not decompose on heating.
They do not burn easily and form ionic bonds.
They are good electrolytes.
They do not show the phenomenon of isomerism and most of them are colourless and odourless.
