How can volcanoes be classified on the basis of their activity

On the basis of their activities (periodicity of eruptions),volcanoes may be classified into active, dormant and extinct volcanoes.
An Active volcano is the one which has erupted in the recent geological Ages and have the chances of erupting again. Example, MT. Vesuvius in Italy.
A dormant volcano is the one which are quiet but can erupt again in future.A dormant volcano is "sleeping," but it could awaken in the future.Mount Rainier in the United States is considered as a dormant volcano.
Extinct Volcano: A volcano which has not erupted in the recent geological ages and is not expected to erupt again is known as an exctinct volcano. Example, Mt. Kulal in Kenya.
