Mechanical energy can be converted to electrical energy with the help of the following simple experiment.
You will need, a strong magnet, a copper wire, a LED, thread and a wooden support.
1) Tie the thread to the magnet and hang it on a support.
2) Place the wire on the ground just below the magnet and connect its ends to the two ends of the LED.
3) Swing the magnet with a small push.
 
You will observe that whenever the magnet passes over the wire, there will be change in magnetic field near the wire.
This will produce current in the wire and the LED will glow.
 
NOTE: The magnet should be strong enough to produce necessary amount of current.
