Islands are formed due to several factors. These are:
- Large islands are formed generally as a result of tectonic activity.
- Some islands may be formed due to volcanic activity. Many islands in the Andaman and Nicobar groups of islands have been formed due to volcanic eruptions.
- Some islands may be formed out of corals. For example, some islands in the Lakshadweep group of islands.
- Small islands are formed as a result of denudation and deposition by the sea waves.
