Dear Soumya,
India as a nation and as a political entity did not exist till the beginning of modern times. It was only by appealing to the sense of belonging, to the shared cultural heritage of the subcontinent that the Indian political class achieved the consolidation and establishment of this country. It still remains the most important unifying factor of its multi-religious and multi-ethnic citizenry.
