Let ball-1 moves with velocity ( k1 i ) and ball-2 moves with velocity ( -k2 j )

Total initial momentum = m1( k1 i ) - m2( k2 j )  ......................(1)

It is given that,  ball-2 moves in positive-x direction after elastic collision, hence let us assme its velocity after collision as ( k3 i )

let ball-1 moves with velocity v after collision.

Total final momenum = m1v + m2 ( k3 i ) ..................... (2)

By conservation of momentum, we equate both (1) and (2) and simplify to get  v = [ k1 - (m2 / m1) k3] i  - (m2/m1)( k2 j )

since m1 > m2 ,  we have [ k1 - (m2 / m1) k3] > 0 .

Hence after collision, velocity of ball-1 has positive x-component and negative y-component
