The below is an example that explains that the
"acceleration due to gravity on the Moon is one sixth the value on the surface of the Earth":

- It is a factual information that the acceleration due to gravity on the surface of the Moon is about 1.625 m/s2 when compared to the acceleration due to gravity on the surface of the Earth which is 9.8 m/s2 .
- Weight is the force acting on the mass of a body that pulls it downwards due to the gravitational pull of the surface.
- Weight (w) = mass (m) x acceleration due to gravity (g)
- On the surface of the Earth, the weight of a body that has a mass of 10 kg will be
 w = 10 x 9.8 = 98 N
- On the surface of the Moon, the weight of the same body that has a mass of 10 kgs will be
w = 10 x 1.625 = 16.25 N
Comparison of the weight of a body on the Moon with respect to that on the Earth = 16.25/98  = 1/6
- Thus it is proved with this example that the acceleration due to gravity and the weight of any body on the Moon is 1/6th of that on the Earth
