Given: 3rd term of an AP is 3 and 11th term is -21
a3 = 3 and a11 = -21
Using the nth term formula, we have
a+2d=3 ... (i)
a+10d = -21 ... (ii)
Subtracting (i) from (ii), we get
8d=-24
d=-3
Substituting in (i), we get
a+2(-3)=3
a=9
Hence, the first term and common difference are 9 and -3 respectively.
