CBSE Class 11-science Answered

Half the length of a stick is wooden & half steel. It is pivoted at the wooden end & a force is applied at the steel end at right angles to its length. Next, it is pivoted at the steel end & the same force is applied at the wooden end. In which case is angular acceleration more & why?

begin mathsize 14px style We space know space that comma space straight tau space equals space straight I space cross times space Distance space
Or space straight tau equals space Iα space equals space constant
rightwards arrow space straight alpha space equals space straight tau over straight I
or space space straight alpha space proportional to space 1 over straight I
Here comma space straight tau space is space the space same space in space both space cases comma space but space straight I subscript 1 space greater than space straight I subscript 2 comma space hence space straight alpha subscript 1 space less than space straight alpha subscript 2 end style

When the stick is pivoted at the steel end (heavier material), it lies at a lesser distance from the axis of rotation. Therefore, the moment of inertia of the stick will be lesser in this case. Thus, angular acceleration will be more in the case where the wooden part (lighter material) is adjusted at larger distance from the axis of rotations.
