Hi Sahil,

Zygotes are formed by the union of male gametes (sperms) and female gametes (egg).

To produce 40 zygotes,

  • 40 meiotic divisions are necessary to produce 40 haploid egg cells because generally 1 egg is produced by the meiosis of 1 oogonium.
  • 10 meiotic divisions are necessary to produce 40 haploid sperms because 4 spermatids are produced by the meiosis of 1 primary spermatocyte.

Therefore, the total number of meiotic divisions required to produce 40 zygotes = 40 + 10 = 50.
